From the speech of the noble Imaam Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah

"The True Rahmah"

"From that which is befitting to know is that "Rahmah" is a characteristic which requires the bringing about of that which is beneficial and good to the servant. This is the case even if the soul dislikes it and it is difficult upon it. This is the true "Rahmah". The most merciful of the people to you is the one who is hard/difficult upon you with regards to bringing about that which is to your benefit and repelling that which is harmful from you.

Therefore from the mercy of the father for his child is that he compels his child to observe discipline with regards to the attainment of knowledge and the practice of it. He (the father) is hard upon his child with regards to that by way of disciplining the child and other than that. Also he is hard upon him by way of preventing him from the fulfillment of his (evil) desires which will return to him as that which will harm him. Whenever the father is negligent in that affair with regards to his child, that is a result of a lack of his "Rahmah" for him. Even if he (the father) thinks that he is having "Rahmah" upon him, giving him comfort and giving him relief, this is "Rahmah" that is accompanied with ignorance. Similar to the "Rahmah" of the mother.

Based upon this, from the completeness of the "Rahmah" of the Most Merciful of those who show mercy, He (Allaah) sent down upon the servant different types of trials and test. Indeed He (Allaah) is most knowledgeable of that which is of his benefit. Therefore His (Allaah) testing of him (the servant) and preventing him from many of his goals and desires is from His "Rahmah" for him. However the servant due to his ignorance and oppression he falsely accuses His Lord (of that which is not befitting) for His testing of him. He (the servant) doesn't know His (Allaah's) goodness to him by way of His testing him with test. There has come in the narration:

"When the one who is being tested is supplicated for:-Oh Allaah have mercy upon him- Allaah the Most High says -How can I have mercy upon from something which I am having mercy upon him with-"

In another narration:

"Indeed when Allaah the Most High loves His servant, He protects him from the worldly life, its goodness and its desirable affairs just as He protects one of you from his sickness"

This is from the completeness of His "Rahmah" for him (the servant) and not from His stinginess upon Him. How could this be when He is The Most Generous The Glorified. He is the one who possess all generosity. The generosity of the creation in comparison to His generosity is less than an atom in the mountains of the world and its sand.

From His "Rahmah" with His servants:

His testing of them with the commandments and the prohibitions as a means of a "Rahmah" and protection. He (Allaah) has no need for them in that which He has commanded them with, for He is The Self-Sufficient, The All-Praiseworthy. Likewise this is not stinginess from Him upon them in that which He prohibited them from, for He is The Most Generous and The Most Noble.

From His "Rahmah":

He disturbs and spoils the worldly life upon them so that they do not seek to inhabit it (forever) and become at ease with it. Also (this is done) so that they desire the established bounty in its abode and proximity. Therefore He drives them to that with the whips of trials and tribulations. He prevents them in order to give them. He test them in order to pardon them. He causes them to die in order to give them life.

From His "Rahmah" for them:

He warns them against Himself in order that they do not become deceived by it and as a result of that, they deal with Him (Allaah) in a manner which is not not befitting for them to deal with Him. It is just as He stated:

"Allaah warns you against Himself and Allaah is merciful to His servants"

(Soorah Aali 'Imraan: 30)

More than one from amongst the Salaf stated:

"From His mercy with the servants is that He warned them against Himself in order that they do not become deceived by it".

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him) stated:

Beginning of quote:

Indeed the worship, which Allaah has legislated, is built upon established fundamentals and foundations that can be summed up in the following (points):

1. Ebaadah (worship) is Tawqeefiyyah. This means there is no place for (personal) views regarding it. Rather, it is a must that the legislator of it is Allaah. As Allaah said to His Prophet:

فَٱسۡتَقِمۡ
كَمَآ أُمِرۡتَ وَمَن تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلَا تَطۡغَوۡاْ‌ۚ

"So stand (ask Allaah to make) you (Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) firm and straight (on the religion of Islâmic Monotheism) as you are commanded and those (your companions) who turn in repentance (unto Allaah) with you, and transgress not (Allaah’s legal limits)." [Soorah Hud: 112]

Allaah also states:

ثُمَّ
جَعَلۡنَـٰكَ عَلَىٰ شَرِيعَةٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَمۡرِ فَٱتَّبِعۡهَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعۡ أَهۡوَآءَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ

"Then We have put you (O Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) on a (plain) way of (Our) commandment [like the one which We commanded Our Messengers before you (i.e. legal ways and laws of the Islâmic Monotheism)]. So follow you that (Islâmic Monotheism and its laws), and follow not the desires of those who know not." [Soorah al-Jaathiyah: 18]

And Allaah states about His Prophet:

إِنۡ
أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ

"I only follow that which is revealed to me." [Soorah al-Ahqaaf: 9]

2. It is a must that the Ebaadah (worship) be for Allaah alone, free from any of the affairs of Shirk (polytheism). For Allaah says:

فَمَن
كَانَ يَرۡجُواْ لِقَآءَ رَبِّهِۦ فَلۡيَعۡمَلۡ عَمَلاً۬ صَـٰلِحً۬ا وَلَا يُشۡرِكۡ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِۦۤ أَحَدَۢا

"So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord." [Soorah al-Kahf: 110]

If anything from amongst the affairs of Shirk (polytheism) mixes with the Ebaadah (worship) then it invalidates it. Just as Allaah mentions:

وَلَوۡ
أَشۡرَكُواْ لَحَبِطَ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ

"But if they had joined in worship others with Allaah, all that they used to do would have been of no benefit to them." [Soorah al-An'aam: 88]

Allaah has also states:

وَلَقَدۡ
أُوحِىَ إِلَيۡكَ وَإِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِكَ لَٮِٕنۡ أَشۡرَكۡتَ لَيَحۡبَطَنَّ عَمَلُكَ وَلَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِينَ بَلِ ٱللَّهَ فَٱعۡبُدۡ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ

"And indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), as it was to those (Allaah's Messengers) before you: If you join others in worship with Allaah, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers. Nay! But worship Allaah (Alone and none else), and be among the grateful."
[Soorah az-Zumar: 65-66]

3. It is a must that the example (to be followed) in the acts of Ebaadah (worship) and the one who clarifies it, is the messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). Just as Allaah states:

لَّقَدۡ
كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ۬

"Indeed in the Messenger of Allaah (Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallaam) you have a good example to follow." [Soorah al-Ahzaab: 21]

Allaah has states:

وَمَآ
ءَاتَٮٰكُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَہَٮٰكُمۡ عَنۡهُ فَٱنتَهُواْ‌ۚ

"And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it)." [Soorah al-Hashr: 7]

The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) stated:

"Whoever does an action and our affair is not over it, it is rejected." (Muslim)

In another narration:

"Whoever introduces into our affair that which is not from it, it is rejected. (Agreed Upon)

The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) also stated:

"Pray the way you have seen me pray."(Agreed Upon)

And the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Take from me your rituals of Hajj."(Muslim)

... To other than that from the texts.

4. Ebaadah (worship) is limited/regulated by times and amounts. It is not permissible to transgress and go beyond them. An example would be the pray, as Allaah says:

إِنَّ
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتۡ عَلَى ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ كِتَـٰبً۬ا مَّوۡقُوتً۬ا

"Verily, As-Salât (the prayer) is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours."
[Soorah an-Nisaa: 103]

Also (from that which is included) is the like of Hajj (the pilgrimage). Allaah states:

ٱلۡحَجُّ
أَشۡهُرٌ۬ مَّعۡلُومَـٰتٌ۬‌ۚ

"The Hajj (pilgrimage) is (in) the well-known (lunar year) months (i.e. the 10th month, the 11th month and the first ten days of the 12th month of the Islâmic calendar, i.e. two months and ten days)." [Soorah al-Baqarah: 197]

Likewise, in the matter of fasting, Allaah says:

شَہۡرُ
رَمَضَانَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ هُدً۬ى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَـٰتٍ۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَٱلۡفُرۡقَانِ‌ۚ فَمَن شَہِدَ مِنكُمُ ٱلشَّہۡرَ فَلۡيَصُمۡهُ‌ۖ

"The month of Ramadân in which was revealed the Qur'ân, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadân i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month." [Soorah al-Baqarah: 185]

5. It is a must that the Ebaadah is established upon loving Allaah, lowering oneself to Him, fearing Him, and hoping in His reward. Allaah mentions:

أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ
ٱلَّذِينَ يَدۡعُونَ يَبۡتَغُونَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمُ ٱلۡوَسِيلَةَ أَيُّہُمۡ أَقۡرَبُ وَيَرۡجُونَ رَحۡمَتَهُ ۥ وَيَخَافُونَ عَذَابَهُ

"Those whom they call upon [like '
Īsā (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary), 'Uzair (Ezra), angel] desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord (Allaah), as to which of them should be the nearest and they ['Īsā (Jesus), 'Uzair (Ezra), angels and others] hope for His Mercy and fear His Torment.” [Soorah al-Israa: 57]??

Allaah says about His Prophets:??

إِنَّهُمۡ
ڪَانُواْ يُسَـٰرِعُونَ فِى ٱلۡخَيۡرَٲتِ وَيَدۡعُونَنَا رَغَبً۬ا وَرَهَبً۬ا‌ۖ وَڪَانُواْ لَنَا خَـٰشِعِينَ

"Verily, they used to hasten on to do good deeds, and they used to call on Us with hope and fear, and used to humble themselves before Us." [Soorah al-Anbiyaa: 90]

Allaah also states:

قُلۡ
إِن كُنتُمۡ تُحِبُّونَ ٱللَّهَ فَٱتَّبِعُونِى يُحۡبِبۡكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَيَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡ ذُنُوبَكُمۡ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ۬ رَّحِيمٌ۬ قُلۡ أَطِيعُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلرَّسُولَ‌ۖ فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡاْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِينَ

"Say (O Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, to mankind): If you (really) love Allaah then follow me (i.e. accept Islâmic Monotheism, follow the Qur'aan and the Sunnah), Allaah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Say (O Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam): Obey Allaah and the Messenger (Muhammad sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). But if they turn away, then Allaah does not like the disbelievers." [Soorah Aali 'Imraan: 31-32]

Allaah states (in this verse) the signs of love for Allaah and its fruits. As for its signs: It is the following of the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and obedience to the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). And as for its fruits: It is the attainment of the love of Allaah, the forgiveness of the sins, and the receiving of His mercy.

6. The obligation of Ebaadah does not cease (to be upon the person) from the time of his reaching the state of puberty until the time of his death. Concerning this Allaah states:

وَلَا
تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسۡلِمُونَ

"… and do not die except in a state of Islaam [as Muslims (with complete submission to Allaah)." [Soorah Aali 'Imraan: 102]

Allaah also says:

وَٱعۡبُدۡ
رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأۡتِيَكَ ٱلۡيَقِينُ

"And worship your Lord until there comes unto you the certainty (i.e. death)."
[Soorah al-Hijr: 99]

His Name and Kunya: Aboo Muhammad Falaah bin Ismaa.eel bin Ahmad Mandakaar
His Birth: The noble Shaykh was born in the year 1950
His seeking of Knowledge:
The Shaykh began seeking knowledge ý after studying in the English language- and his age was 16 years of age, so he travelled to the people of knowledge to take from them. And he started his university level studies in the Islaamic University of Madeenah al-Munawwarah and that was in the year 1976. And he accompanied the scholars during his university studies and he prepared his thesis for the Masters and the Doctorates and he studied with them the ýAqeedah and Hadeeth and Science of Hadeeth and Fiqh and its Usool and the Principles of Fiqh and Grammar and Morphology and Balaaghah and Tajweed.
His Qualifications in Knowledge:
The Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him – earned a number of Diplomas and they are:
1) Bachelors degree, and the Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him – earned a level of Excellent.
2) Masters Degree, and the Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him ý earned a level of Excellent and his thesis was an examination of three of the volumes of Shu.ab al-Eemaan of al-Haafidh al-Bayhaqee ý May Allaah have Mercy on him.
3) Doctorates Degree, and the Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him ý earned a level of excellent along with an honorarium. His thesis was titled, (Al-.Allaaqah bayn at-Tassawwuf wat Tashayyu) (The relation between Soofism and Shee.ism)
His Scholars:
The Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him ý studied with a number of the major scholars and from them are:
His Eminence, the Shaykh, the Allaamah, Abdul-Azeez bin Abdullaah bin Baaz ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he attended many of the sittings of knowledge and read to him al-Usool ath-Thalaatha and Kitaab at-Tawheed.
The Noble Shaykh, the scholar of Hadeeth, Muhammad Naasir ad-Deen al-Albaanee in the house of Shaykh Falaah two times once in Madeenah and once in Kuwait.
The Noble Shaykh, The Faqeeh, The Usoolee, The Muffassir, Muhammad bin Saaleh al-Uthaymeen ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he attended many of his sittings of knowledge and he studied with him some chapters from Fiqh.
The Noble Shaykh, Doctor Saalih bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan ý May Allaah Preserve him ý and he attended many of his sittings of knowledge.
- The Noble Shaykh, the scholar of Hadeeth, Abdul-Qaadir bin Habeebullaah as-Sindee ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he was from the Major scholars in Madeenah an-Nabawiyyah. And he read to him Nukhbatul Fikr of al-Haafidh ibn Hajar al-Asqalaanee ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him.
- The Noble Shaykh, the scholar of Hadeeth in al-Hijaaz, Doctor Hammaad bin Muhammad al-Ansaaree ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he ý May Allaah Preserve him – took a lot from the Shaykh, and he accompanied him a lot and very much benefited from him, and read to him
Saheeh al-Bukhaaree,
and al-Ibaanah of Ibn Battah,
and an-Nubuwwaat of Shaykh al-Islaam ibn Taymiyyah,
and Kitaab at-Tawheed of ibn Khuzaymah,
and Kitaab at-Tawheed of Shaykh al-Islaam Muhammad bin ýAbdul-Wahhaab,
and Buloogh al-Maraam of al-Haafidh ibn Hajar al-Asqalaanee, just as he read to him from the Tafseer of the Qurýaan.
The Noble Shaykh, Doctor Muhammad Amaan bin Alee al-Jaamee ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he took a lot of knowledge from the Shaykh, and benefited from him a great benefit, and read to him
al-Qawaaýid al-Muthlaa of al-Allaamah al-Uthaymeen ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him.
and Kitaab at-Tawheed of Shaykh al-Islaam Muhammad bin Abdul-Wahhaab and
Aqeedatul Waasitiyyah of Shaykh al-Islaam ibn Taymiyyah
and Sharh Aqeedatut Tahaawiyyah of ibn Abil Izz al-Hanafee ý May Allaah have Mercy upon them all.
And he studied with him as well the nature of Tawheed in the Aqeedah of the Asharees then Shaykh Muhammad gave to Shaykh Falaah a copy of this book with his notes with his handwriting. And it was published in the year 1306 after the Hijrah. And Shaykh Falaah did not cease to be cautious with this copy and he holds it in high esteem. And he corresponded with the department of Aqeedah in the Islaamic University and Shaykh Muhammad Amaan al-Jaamee ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý was the director for the thesis of the Shaykh in his Masters.
The Noble Shaykh, Doctor Abdul-Kareem bin Muraad al-Atharee ý May Allaah Preserve him ý and he studied with him al-Fataawa al-Hamawiyyah and ar-Risaalah at-Tadmooriyyah and Sharh Aqeedah at-Tahaawiyyah of ibn Abil Izz al-Hanafee. And Shaykh Abdul-Kareem Muraad ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý was from one of the debaters for the Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him – in his Masters thesis.
- The Noble Shaykh, Doctor Abdul-Muhsin bin Hammad al-Abbaad ý May Allaah Preserve him ý and he was the director for the Islaamic University. And he read to him Kitaab ash-Sharee.ah of al-Aajurree and Shifaa al-Aleel of Ibnul Qayyim. And Shaykh Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbaad ý May Allaah Preserve him ý was from one of the debaters for the Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him ý in his Masters thesis.
The Noble Shaykh, the scholar of Hadeeth, al-Ustaadh Doctor Rabee bin Haadee al-Madkhalee, and he earned a high seat in the University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Chair of the teachers). And he read to him Saheeh Muslim and Tadreeb ar-Raawee of al-Haafidh an-Nawawee ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and al-Uboodiyyah of Shaykh al-Islaam ibn Taymiyyah.
The Noble Shaykh, Doctor Alee bin Naasir al-Faqeehee ý May Allaah Preserve him ý and he read to him Kitaab at-Tawheed and Kitaabul Eemaan all of them from al-Haafidh ibn Mundih ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý just as he studied with him valuable classes on al-Millal wan-Nihal.
The Noble Shaykh al-Fardhee, Abdus Samad bin Muhammad al-Kitaab ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he read to him Kitaab at-Tawheed from Saheeh al-Bukhaaree just as he read to him Ilm al-Faraa.id Imlaa
The Noble Shaykh Ubayd bin Abdillaah al-Jaabiree ý May Allaah Preserve him ý and he is from the Major scholars of Madeenah an-Nabawiyyah. He read to him Kitaab at-Tawheed of Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul-Wahhaab ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and Al-Qawaa.id al-Muthlaa and Al-Qawaaýid al-Fiqhiyyah.
The Noble Shaykh, Doctor Abdullaah bin Muhammad al-Ghunaymaan ý May Allaah Preserve him ý and he read to him Fath-ul-Majeed and Kitaabul Eemaan of Shaykh al-Islaam ibn Taymiyyah, and Shaykh Abdullaah al-Ghunaymaan ý May Allaah Preserve him ý was the director of the Shaykhs thesis in his Doctorates.
The Noble Shaykh, the Muffassir, Muhammad bin al-Mukhtaar ash-Shanqeetee ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he took from him the knowledge of Tafseer in the Islaamic University and in the Haram al-Madanee ash-Shareef, and he read to him Sunan an-Nasaaýee as well.
The Noble Shaykh, Doctor Alee bin Abdur-Rahmaan al-Hudhayfee ý May Allaah Preserve him ý and he read to him Kitaab at-Tawheed from Saheeh al-Bukhaaree.
The Noble Shaykh, the Muffassir, the Usoolee, the Grammarian, Ahmad bin Taaweet at-Tanjee ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he is from the scholars of al-Maghrib (Morrocco). And he used to be ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý was a Judge, a Judge of Tanjah during the time of the French Colonialization of Morrocco. And he took from the Shaykh the knowledge of Tafseer in the Islaamic University and he read to him in Usool al-Fiqh and Rawdatun Naadhir of Ibn Qudaamah in the Haram al-Madanee. And he read to him from the knowledge of the language, Sharh Alfiyyah ibn Maalik of ibn ýAqeel.
The Noble Shaykh, ýAlee bin Sinaan ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he was from the scholars of Madeenah an-Nabawiyyah, and he read to him Qatarun Nadaa.
The Noble Shaykh of the Language, Ahmad bin Maýloom ash-Shanqeetee ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he was from one of the scholars of the language in Madeenah an-Nabawiyyah and he has an explanation of Alfiyyah ibn Maalik, which he compose in three compositions. And he read to him al-Muqaddimah al-Aajurroomiyyah and Sharh Alfiyyah ibn Maalik of Ibn Aqeel ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him.
The Noble Shaykh, the Usoolee, Doctor Zaynul Aabideen ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him -. And he read to him Rawdatun Naadhir of Ibn Qudaamah.
The Noble Shaykh, the Faqeeh Abdullaah bin Haamid al-Hammaad ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he read to him Subal as-Salaam.
The Noble Shaykh, the Faqeeh, Muhammad bin Hamood al-Waailee ý May Allaah Preserve him ý and he read to him Bidaayatul Mujtahid of Ibn Rushd.
The Noble Shaykh, Abdur-Raýoof al-Libdee ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he was from the scholars of the language in Madeenah an-Nabawiyyah and he read to him Sharh Alfiyyah ibn Maalik of Ibn Aqeel.
The Noble Shaykh, Mahmood as-Samaahee ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he was from the scholars of Fiqh in Madeenah an-Nabawiyyah, and he read to him Bidaayah al-Mujtahid
The Noble Shaykh Umar bin Muhammad Falaatah ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he read to him Sunan Abee Daawood.
The Noble Shaykh, the Muffassir, Aboo Bakr al-Jazaairee ý May Allaah Preserve him ý and he took from him the knowledge of Tafseer and he used to attend his classes in the Haram al-Madanee.
The Noble Shaykh Ahmad al-Azraq ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he read to him Subal as-Salaam the explanation of Buloogh al-Maraam.
The Noble Shaykh Alee bin Musharraf al-Umree ý May Allaah Preserve him ý and Imaam al-Albaanee ý May Allaah Preserve him ý nicknamed him al-Albaanee as-Sagheer (the smaller al-Albaanee), and he read to him ýSunan at-Tirmidheeý.
The Noble Shaykh, the Recitor, Muhammad bin Ramadhaan al-Muqree ý May Allaah have Mercy upon him ý and he took from him the knowledge of Tajweed.
And from what we mentioned from the Scholars of the Noble shaykh Falaah, they are some of those whom the Shaykh had studied with and taken knowledge from.
Description of his Manners
The Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him ý is distinguished by good character, and manners in his actions, and desire to benefit and seek benefit, and humble with his students and brothers, and endeavours to judge justly in their affairs, and his concern for the Book and the Sunnah and the Aqeedah of Ahlus Sunnah wal-Jamaaýah, and he is honoured with the people of knowledge and his students in a high position, and esteem, and respect. From the most distinguishing signs of the Shaykh in his Manners is a constant smile which never leaves his face when he speaks to others and answers their questions.
And the Shaykh ý and All Praise is Due to Allaah ý it is witnessed with the one who is far and near in a high position and good character and a lot of manners, and for that he is similar to a father for all the Salafees in Kuwait.
His efforts in Knowledge and Dawah:
The Shaykh has many efforts in spreading knowledge, he joins in many of the Knowledge Seminars, and is active in spreading Dawah that is found in Kuwait and which benefits the Students of Knowledge.
And the Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him – is distinguished with his knowledge-based activity, and he gives classes on the various books of Ahlus Sunnah wal-Jamaa.ah, and from the books and texts that the Noble Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him- teaches and he does not cease to teach some of them:
- al-Usool ath-Thalaatha
- Kashf ash-Shubuhaat
- Al-Usool as-Sittah
- Fath-ul-Majeed
- Sharh Aqeedatul Waasitiyyah of Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan
- Al-Fataawa al-Hamawiyyah
- Sharh Aqeedatut Tahaawiyyah of Ibn Abil Izz

And the Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him ý does not cease to teach the students of knowledge in Kuwait and outside of it, just as he does not cease to teach Aqeedah in the Islaamic University of Kuwait. And the Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him ý takes part in the Methodology of Aqeedah in spreading Islaamic education in the Ministry of Education in the country of Kuwait.
His Methodology of Teaching
The Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him- is distinguished in his unique style in teaching. And from the most important of what distinguishes the Shaykh in his teaching:
Examination of knowledge-based Issues in the chapter of Beliefs by mentioning the statements of the Salaf and the Muhaqqiqeen in these issues.
A way of explaining matters of beliefs by using general principles of the Manhaj of the Salaf ý May Allaah have Mercy upon them ý
- Mentioning the statements of the differing sects to Ahlus Sunnah wal-Jamaaýah in matters of Belief, and refuting them from the Book and the Sunnah and the language of the ýArab and the statements of the Salaf.
- Much of what the Shaykh ý May Allaah Preserve him ý relates from his scholars from what he learned from them, so he mentions their statements and in the matters which they have explained.
- Verify the text of the book being explained.
- Mentioning the statements of the Fuqahaa, Muhadditheen, and Muhaqiqeen from the people of knowledge and their Madhhab in explaining the matters of Fiqh, and using the Daleel of their Madhhab from the Book and the Sunnah and the rest of the proofs of the rulings, then comparing and giving preference of the statements of the Fuqahaa.

as-Salaamu`alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatuh Brothers and Sisters,

Walhamdulillaah the month of Ramadhaan is upon us and in shaa Allaah we will be very busy with affairs of Ibaadah with many attending Taraweeh Prayers amongst the people of the Sunnah in shaa Allaah. As the Salaah times for Isha still coincide closely to the class start time for which Taraweeh will follow, this presents a scheduling challenge.

Unless otherwise notified we will postpone classes on Wednesdays and Sundays for the month in shaa'Allaah and resume after 'Eid ul-Fitr 1431.

Should anyone who we've addressed in the mailing list (and we apologize for duplicates as there are more than one mailing lists in our normal distribution) need to comment, query on this matter please reply here and your questions will be handled barakAllaahu feekum.

1. The title of this series is “Understanding La Illaha Illallaah”.

2. It is important to understand La Illaha IllAllaah correctly for various reasons. Amongst those reasons are because this is the most important aspect in the life of a Muslim, one cannot properly worship Allaah without understanding La Illaha IllAllaah correctly as it is the first obligation upon the people. La Illaha IllAllaah is the key to Paradise.

3. The statement of Shaykhul Islam Ibn Qayyim al- Jawziyyah that La Illaha IllAllaah is the first of the affair and that last of it is because the way one enters into the fold of Islam is by way of the statement of La Illaha IllAllaah, so that is the first of the affair. It is the last of the affair because the way that a Muslim should leave this earth is having his/her statement to be La Illaha IllAllaah. The Messenger of Allah (SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam) said, “Whoevers last statement at the time of death is La Illaha IllAllaah enters into the Paradise.”

4. The proof of Allaah sending all the Messengers to call their people to La Illaha IllAllaah is in Qur’an (one of the main text as a proof for this) in 16:36 “And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship Allaah alone, and avoid taghut (all false deities)…”
Also as an establishment of this point is in 21:25 where Allah (Subhanna wa at ala) mentions: “And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam) but We revealed to him (saying): La Ilaha Illa Ana (None has the right to be worshipped but I (Allaah), so worship Me (Alone and none else).”
And these two proofs are specific to the question.

5. The other names the La Illaha IllAllaah are the Kalaima at Tawheed (The statement of Tawheed) because in this statement “La Illaha IllAllaah“ is where you find the establishment of the Oneness of Allah (Subhanahu wa at ala) in His Lordship, Kalaima Ikhlaas (The statement of sincerity) because in this statement it establishes that all worship is for Allaah (Subhanahu wa at ala). Also the term “The Shahadah” is mentioned because the people are called to bear witness to it. Coming from the statement of The Messenger (SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam) when he sent Muadh to Yemen to call the people of the book to al-Islam he mentioned call them to testify “Ashadu an la ilaha illAllaah” to be testified that none has the right to be worshipped except for Allaah.

6. There are two pillars to La Illaha IllAllaah

7. The 2 pillars to Laa Illaaha Illallaah are negation and affirmation

8. The meaning of negation as a pillar of La Illaaha Illallaah means to negate anything having the right be worshipped except Allaah and the meaning of affirmation as a pillar of La Illaaha Illallaah is to affirm that Allaah is singled out in all worship alone.

9. The principle that we covered to be extracted is “At Takliyah before At Tahleeyah” meaning there must be the removal before beautification. Shirk must be removed before one beautifies him/herself with Tawheed.

10. The proof for this principle is in Qur’an (2:256) where Allah (Subhanahu wa at ala) mentions, “There is no compulsion in the religion. Verily, The right path has to become distinct from the wrong path. So whoever disbelieves in the taghut (all false deities) and believes in Allaah has grabbed hold to the firm handhold, which doesn’t break. And Allaah is All-Hearing and All-Knowing.” In the area of the statement “…Whoever disbelieves in the taghut…” this is the negation (at Takliyah, the removal of shirk) and “…believes in Allaah…” is the affirmation (at Tahleeyah, the beautification).

11. To say La illaha Illallaah means “There’s no god but Allaah” is incorrect and the proof is in Qur’an (31:25) where Allaah states, “If you were to ask them, “Who has created the heavens and the earth?”, they will say : “Allaah.” Allaah is addressing the Prophet Muhammad (SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam) that if he were to ask the polytheists this. This verse shows that the polytheists believed that Allah (Subhanahu wa at ala) is The Creator. Although that they believed that Allaah is The Creator, this did not enter them into the fold of al-Islam. So to say “There’s no Creator except for Allaah” would mean that the polytheists were believers cause they believed this. Amongst the proof is in (23:84-85) , where Allaah states, (:84)“Say: “Whose is the earth and whoever is therein? If you know!” (:85) “They will say: It is Allaah’s!” Say: “Will you not them remember?” And also in (12:106) where Allaah mentions: “And most of them do not believe in Allaah except that they are polytheists.” Meaning they believe that Allaah is The Creator however they associate partners with Him.

12. The translated meaning: “There’s no god but Allaah” is incorrect from two angles.
The Scholars mentioned that if one was to say this then that would mean that nothing else is worshipped other than Allaah and other things are worshipped besides Allah. Allaah describes this in Qur’an (11:101), “We did not wrong them, but they have wronged themselves, so their gods that they called on besides Allaah did not benefit them in any way when the commandment of your Lord came, nor did they increase them in anything except destruction.” There are other gods, however the presence of these other gods are false gods, false deities. And the second angle is that a god is worshipped and to say that there is no god but Allaah would mean that everything that is worshipped is Allaah.

13. The correct translation of Laa Illaaha Illallaah is that There is nothing or noone who has the right to be worshipped except for Allaah.

14. The 8 conditions of Laa Illaaha Illallaah are:
1. Al Ilm (knowledge) which negates ignorance
2. Al Yaqeen (certainty) which negates doubt
3. Al Ikhlaas (sincerity) which negates polytheism
4. Al Sidq (truthfulness) which negates lying and hypocrisy
5. Al Mahabbah (love) which negates hatred
6. Al Inqiyad (the submission or surrender) which negates abandonment
7. Al Qubool (acceptance) which negates rejection
8. Al Kufr bi taghut -the disbelief of the false deities

15. The proofs for the first condition (Al Ilm, knowledge) are in Qur’an (47:19), (43:86) and in Sahih Muslim #26

16. The proofs for the second condition (Al Yaqeen, certainty) are in Qur’an (49:15), (9:45) , (#3372 of Sahih Al Bukhari and #31 of Sahih Muslim) and #29 of Sahih Muslim.

17. The proofs for the third condition (Al Ikhlaas, sincerity) are in Qur’an (39:3), (98:5), in (Sahih Muslim #33 and Sahih Al Bukhari #425) and Sahih Al Bukhari #99

18. The proofs for the forth condition (Al Sidq, Truthfulness) is in Qur’an (2:8-10),
(29:1-3),in Sahih Muslim #32 and in Sahih Al Bukhari #128

19. The conditions for ibaadah to be accepted are 3 and are extracted from (18:10):

“Say (O Muhammad SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam): “I am only a man like you. It has been revealed to me that you Ilah (God) is One Ilah (Allaah). So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in worship of his Lord.”

1. Islam (as a condition is extracted from,“..Whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord…”)
2. Ikhlas (as a condition is extracted from, “…associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord.”)
3. It’ibaah (as a condition is extracted from, “…let him work righteous actions..”)

20. The Prophet (SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam) advised Muadh not to convey the glad tidings of that whoever said La Illaha IllAllaah truthfully from his/her heart, the hellfire will be prohibited from them. Muadh mentioned “Should I not inform the people?” The Prophet (SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam) mentioned “Do not inform them for they will depend upon this alone.” The principle (that we covered) is the repelling of the harm (repelling the people depending on that statement alone and leaving off actions) is giving precedence to bringing about the good (the people being given the glad tidings).

21. The Prophet (SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam) said: “Whoever concealed knowledge, Allaah will make him wear a bridle of fire upon his face on the Day of Judgment .”

22. The Ulema covered that it is permissible to conceal knowledge for the purpose of repelling a greater harm.

23. The proof from the Sunnah which establishes that ignorance is blameworthy is in found in the Sunan of Abu Dawood that verily the cure for the ignorance is the question.

24. Imaam Al-Bukhari mentioned in his book: “Chapter, knowledge before the statement and the action.”

25. This statement is to be found in The Book of Knowledge.

26. The proof for this statement is in Qur’an (47:19)

27. The 8 points that lead to the knowledge of La Illaha Illallaah are:
1. Contemplating over the Names and Attributes of Allaah
2. Knowing that Allaah is singled out in the arranging of the affairs of creation
3. Having knowledge that Allaah is singled out in bestowing of the bounties, which are outward and inward, that which is connected to one’s deen and one’s dunyah.
4. That which we see and hear of ,of the reward of those who established tawheed, from the awliya of Allaah.
5. Having knowledge of the descriptions of that which is worshipped along side and taken as deities and how they are deficient.
6. That the books of Allaah are all agreed upon La illaha Illallaah.
7. That the elite from the creation (who are the most complete from creation in the matter of character and intellect) are the Messengers, The Prophets and the Scholars, they all bore witness to La Illaha Illallaah
8. That which Allaah has established from the proofs and evidences in His creation which indicates His tawheed.

28. The levels of certainty are:
1. Knowledge of certainty (Ilm ul Yaqeen)
2. Sight of certainty (Iyn ul Yaqeen)
3. Taste of certainty (or Truth of certainty, Haqq ul Yaqeen)

29. The proofs for the levels of certainty are:
1. Knowledge of certainty (Takathur:5)
2. Sight of certainty (Takathur:7)
3. Taste or Truth of certainty (Waqi’ah:95)

30. The 4 ways a Muslim can apostate from Islaam are:

1. A Creed or belief that one holds which will invalidate one’s faith.
2. A Statement that on makes with his tongue.
3. An Action which is done that can cause a Muslim to apostate.
4. The matter of doubt.

31. An example for #1 is: If a person was to believe after believing that none has the right to be worshipped besides Allaah, that someone along with Allaah created along with Allaah.
An example for #2 is: If a person curses Allaah, or curses the Messenger of Allaah.
An example for #3 is: If a person supplicates to the dead or do something foul to the Qur’an.
An example for #4 is: Someone having doubt on whether the Prophet Muhammad (SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam) is the last Messenger or not after believing that he is.

32. The meaning of Shirk (best mentioned by the Ulema) is making other than Allaah equal with Allaah in those matters which are specifically for Allaah.

33. There are two categories of Shirk (that we covered in this class)

34. The differences between the categories is that the major shirk (Akbar) expels the person from the fold of al-Islam whereas the minor shirk (Asghar) does not. The major shirk invalidates all of the person’s actions, even the actions done sincerely for Allaah (Subhana wa at ala) incorrectly whereas the minor shirk only invalidates the action that is present. Also, the one who dies upon major shirk will be punished in the hellfire forever, whereas (according to some of the Ulema) the one who dies upon minor shirk will enter into the hellfire, but they will eventually come out and Allaah knows best.

35. The two categories of Nifaaq are:
1. Hypocrisy of Creed (Nifaaqul It‘ikhadi, which is the greater form)
2. Hypocrisy of Action (Nifaaqul Amali, which is the lesser form)

36. The difference between the two categories of Nifaaq are that in Nifaaqul It’ikhadi (major) this person in reality is a disbeliever with Allah (Subhana wa at ala) and this person will be in the lowest depths of the hellfire if they die upon it and Nifaaqul Amali (minor or lesser) does not exit an individual from the fold of Islam but can lead a person to the greater form of hypocrisy.

37. Nifaaq appeared amongst this ummah after the hijrah of The Prophet (SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam) from Mecca to Medina after Badr (as mentioned by the Ulema).

38. No. This Ummah is not the first to experience nifaaq rather nifaaq was present amongst the previous nations. The proof for this is in Qur’an (66:10) regarding the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut where Allaah states: “Allaah sets forth an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut. They were under two of our righteous slaves, but they both betrayed them (their husbands by rejecting their doctrine). So they (Nuh and Lut) availed them (their respective wives) not against Allaah and it was said: “Enter the Fire along with those who enter!””
We covered that Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimhuallaah) covered a very important point that the betrayal was not in the wives being in beds with other men rather the betrayal was in the religion (deen) by outwardly displaying that they were with their husbands upon the same deen but in reality they were with their people upon kuffir (disbelief). And that which establishes this is that which Allaah (subhana wa at ala) mentioned in (51:35-36): (35) “So We brought out from therein the believers.” (36) “But We found not there any house of the Muslims except one [Lut and his two daughters].”
Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimhuallaah) mentioned that when Allaah (Subhana wa at ala) describes a house, he describes it as a Muslim home, but when it came to Him mentioning those who were saved, only the believers were saved. And that indicates that the wife of Lut outwardly displayed to be a Muslim, so therefore the house is a Muslim home, but when it came to those who were saved, she was not saved because she was not a believer. Showing that she outwardly displayed Islam but in her heart there was kuffir (disbelief) which is greater form of hypocrisy and Allaah knows best.

39. The five characteristics of Nifaaq are:
1. Whenever he speaks, he tells lies
2. Whenever he promises, he always breaks it (his promise)
3. If trusted, he proves to be dishonest.
4. Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very evil, insulting manner.
5. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves himself treacherous.

40. The categories of people are(3):
1. The Believer
2. The Disbeliever
3. The Hypocrites

41. The principle that we covered regarding the affair of the heart is that the affairs of the heart are left to Allaah (Subhana wa at ala) and no one knows them. Even if the out ward strongly indicates something, it is to left to Allaah alone.

42. The areas where Sidq (truthfulness) is supposed to be in the life of a Muslim is in our speech, actions and most importantly our creed.

43. When you look at the condition of Ikhlaas, it negates shirk. So when one says La Illaha IllAllaah, he has to say this for the sake of Allaah (Subhana wa at ala). When you look at the condition of Sidq, it negates the lie, meaning from the tongue the person is saying the truth (being truthful in the statement of La Illaha IllAllaah). So Ikhlaas negates Shirk and Sidq negates the lie.

44. Prior to the Hijrah of The Prophet (SalAllaahu alaihe wa sallam) from Mecca to Medina, the Muslims were in a state of weakness and being oppressed. There was no worldly gain for one to obtained in being a Muslim in Mecca. So the Scholars mentioned that those who believed (in Mecca) were truly believers because there was no dunya for one to obtain because the Muslims were in a state of weakness.

45. The 2 Categories of the miracles of the Prophet (mentioned by Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah) are:
1. El Ayahtus Ihsiya (Tangible)
2. El Ayahtu Akhaliyah (Intellectual)

46. The examples for the “Tangible miracles” of The Prophet are (3):
1. The miracles that Allaah cause to take place by The Prophet’s hands, outside of his physical being.
2. That which was witnessed by his physical being and image which was an indication of his prophet hood (the seal of prophet hood)
3. That which is in The Prophet’s characteristics like truthfulness, trustworthiness and the likes.
The examples for the “Intellectual signs (miracles) of The Prophet are (6):
1. He’s from a tribe and not the people of knowledge
2. 40 years of age passed that he didn’t inform the people of his prophet hood.
3. His patience and forbearance in conveying the message.
4. All of The Prophet’s supplications were answered.
5. The glad tidings of his coming came are in previous scriptures.
6. He conveyed information about the unseen which testifies his prophet hood as this information could have only come from Allah (subhana wa at ala).

47. From what we’ve covered, the differences between a test and a punishment depends on the individual who is experiencing the calamity or the affair. Allaah (Subhana wa at ala) put test upon the people to raise their level and a punishment is sent down because of that which the people indulged in with disobedience to Allaah.

48. From the statement of Shaykh Saalih Ali Shaykh he mentioned that in general it is not permissible for one to say that a Muslim is being punished because it is not known what the case is of this Muslim.

49. One can determine whether their trial is actually a punishment by if they are people who oppose the commandments of Allaah. If they are upon obedience or disobedience to Allaah (Subhana wa at ala). If the person is obedient to the commandments of Allaah, then the calamity is a test. If the person is upon disobedience to Allaah, then the person can consider that which has befallen him/her as a punishment.

The Class Test Questions were successfully distributed by Br. Abu Yusuf Khaleefah, walhamdulillaah, on Sunday January 17th during the 9:00 PM Regularly Scheduled Class for all registrants and active participants who have been attending the Series.

Participants and Mailing List addresses received them via email as well they were posted on the Class Site:
https://sites.google.com/site/whatisislamlearningseries/home/test-questions-for-class, in Twitter in our What Is Islam account as well as Facebook and Multiply in order that those participants not present would be able to receive them also as this is a very important and beneficial exercise.

They may be submitted for those with on-line access to whatisislam1@gmail.com, the class email account and for those participating in the Tele-link on Wednesdays and Sundays (218-936-7999 Pin#194395) they will be discussed interactively next Sunday.

Class will be held as scheduled on Wednesday January 20th as well.
